PHGG vs psyllium: which daily fibre?

Isabgol (psyllium) is India's default fibre. PHGG is what most people should probably take instead. Here's the honest comparison.
First — what these two fibres are
Both are soluble fibres, but they behave very differently. Psyllium (isabgol, from Plantago husk) is a bulk-forming fibre that absorbs water and swells into a gel. PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum; the branded form is Sunfiber®) is guar fibre broken down into shorter chains — so it dissolves invisibly and ferments slowly and gently in the colon, which is what makes it a strong prebiotic.
Psyllium: effective, but hard to live with
Psyllium is genuinely well studied — for constipation, regularity and even cholesterol. The problem isn't whether it works; it's whether you'll keep using it. It thickens instantly into a gel most people can't stand drinking, it can cause gas and cramping in the first weeks, and it must be taken with plenty of water or it can do the opposite of what you want. Real-world compliance collapses within a few weeks — and a fibre you quit is a fibre that does nothing.
PHGG: the daily-friendly prebiotic
- Dissolves completely clear — no sludge, no texture; stir it into any drink and you won't know it's there.
- A truer prebiotic — it selectively feeds beneficial gut bacteria (like Bifidobacteria), and is studied for both constipation and loose stools, because it normalises transit rather than just bulking.
- Gentler — low-FODMAP-certified and far less gas-forming at effective doses, so it suits sensitive guts and IBS better.
- Studied at ~5g/day — a realistic, sustainable daily amount, not a giant scoop.
Head to head
| Psyllium (isabgol) | PHGG (Sunfiber®) | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture in water | Thick gel / sludge | Dissolves clear |
| Prebiotic effect | Modest | Strong, selective |
| Gas / tolerance | Can be rough early on | Gentle, low-FODMAP |
| Good for | Constipation | Constipation and loose stools |
| Daily compliance | Low | High |
Which should you take?
If you specifically need short-term relief from constipation and don't mind the texture, psyllium is fine and cheap. For everyday gut health, a sensitive stomach or IBS, and something you'll genuinely keep up, PHGG is the better daily fibre. Start around 5g/day, take it with water, and give your gut a couple of weeks to adjust.
The real difference: which one you'll still take in March
Fibre only works if it's daily — and daily only happens if it's pleasant. That's why SILT™ Mornings uses PHGG at the full 5g clinical dose in a Lemon Orange drink you'll actually look forward to, with the exact dose printed on the pack. Related: why you wake up bloated →
